Project 365: Week 43 Rejecting the ‘FML’

Day 296: 20Jun2012

It’s a common enough acronym (or “initialism” if you are more a purist), but I’m always deeply bothered by it, and the expression it symbolizes: Fuck My Life.  I get why people  use it, but I find it… disturbing.

One of the things 365 has helped to solidify for me is that life is about choices. Certainly I knew this before,  but there is something about seeing yourself in pictures every day (and usually more than one–and some that make you wonder who that beast is in  your camera) that really just makes you see how foolish a statement, no matter how innocent the intent may be, of something like ‘FML.’

So, I formally reject the acronym I’ve chosen never to use–I refuse to believe that I have no choices in my situation (I may not like what’s available, but there is choice); I refuse to accept, even in the lousiest of times, that I’m not grateful for everything I have; and finally, I refuse to succumb to the notion that I have no control over what happens in my life.  These are the implications from the instances I’ve observed the term used. I choose to not be seen in that light–I have enough problems with natural light and tired eyes most days ;)

The photo I chose this week comes on a day that was fairly lousy and I felt kind of bad.  In looking back, I really only remember the choice to stretch… and it felt so good, I grabbed the camera and did it again.
